In the new study, Ph.D., the study’s senior author and a cardiac exercise physiologist at the University of Virginia. Siddhartha Angadi and colleagues conducted a detailed analysis of the articles and combined the results of several studies. This allowed the collection of data from approximately 400,000 individuals. As a result, scientists were able to understand how body mass index and physical fitness are related to the risk of death.
It turns out that people in good physical condition, regardless of overweight or obesity, have the same risk of death as people in good physical condition and normal weight. At the same time, those who were underweight and had lower VO2 max had a two to three times higher risk of dying from any cause, regardless of their weight.
This means that staying fit and having a higher VO2 max may be more important than just focusing on weight loss to reduce your risk of premature death.
