Trump also proposed a deal under which the US government would buy a 50% stake in TikTok’s US business in exchange for the ability to continue operating the app, Reuters reported. The president also warned that he could impose tariffs on China if Beijing does not approve the deal.
The order says it directs the US attorney general to “take no coercive action for a period of 75 days” to allow the Trump administration to determine next steps. The Attorney General must also notify service providers that they will not be liable for violating the law.
Additionally, Trump’s order prohibited the Justice Department from “taking enforcement action or imposing sanctions” for actions that “occurred during the specified period or before the issuance of the order, including the time since January 19, 2025 until the date of signature,” the document says.
TikTok ceased operations in the United States on January 18, the day before a law aimed at banning the app on national security concerns took effect. On January 20, the social network began restoring operations in the United States after Trump announced plans to resume access to the platform.
