Microsoft is no longer the exclusive provider of OpenAI cloud services. The companies signed an agreement under which OpenAI will be able to host its infrastructure for training and running AI models with external partners. This is stated in a press release on the Microsoft website.

The new agreement gives Microsoft the “right of first refusal.” This means that in the future, OpenAI will be able to turn to a third-party cloud provider to host its infrastructure if Microsoft is unable to provide the necessary resources, TechCrunch explained.
Microsoft emphasized that key elements of the partnership between the companies, including access to OpenAI intellectual property, revenue sharing agreements, and OpenAI API exclusivity, will remain in effect for as long as the contract is in effect, that is, until 2030.
In October, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman attributed the delay in launching the company’s new products to a lack of computing power. That same month, sources told The New York Times that Microsoft was trying to create a replacement for OpenAI’s technology to reduce its dependence on its developments.
On Wednesday, January 22, OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank announced at a press conference at the White House the creation of a joint project called Stargate to develop AI in the United States. In the first stage, the companies will invest 100 billion dollars in the project and in the coming years they plan to invest up to 500 billion dollars more. The president of the United States, Donald Trump, noted that the project will create 100,000 jobs.
