Microsoft is about to say goodbye to one of Windows’ most iconic features. In an attempt to modernize its operating system, the tech giant will leave behind a key component that we have seen since Windows 95. This move not only forgets part of Microsoft’s history, but also further reduces customization options.

According to a report from Neovin, Microsoft will close access to free themes for Windows 10 and Windows 11. The company has updated its support page, warning that it will remove the official theme download site for the operating system. This website offers a directory with dozens of topics grouped into various categories.

“This page containing links to download Windows themes is out of date and will be closed soon. We recommend that you download the latest themes directly from the Microsoft Store for the best experience,” Microsoft says. The Windows Themes website also has a section warning End of support for Windows 10 from October 14, 2025

One glance at the catalog is enough to understand thate Microsoft doesn’t update it constantly. Themes are proof of this Gears of War 3 or Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocola game and a movie that came out over a decade ago.

Microsoft begins restricting access to Windows themes

The end of Windows themes as we knew them began with Windows 8. The shift in emphasis towards a minimalist tiled interface led to the demise of Aero and visual customization. Microsoft brought back some features with the introduction of Windows 10, although the themes were never the same.

Yes, ok topics have lost relevancesome users continue to install them on their computers. Unlike Windows 98, current themes no longer change cursors, sounds, or window layouts. Modern versions only allow you to customize colors, transparency, and enable wallpaper displayed as slides.

The removal of the Temas website closes a chapter in the history of its operating system. Now the only way to download them is through the Microsoft Store, a place that offers several search segmentation options. Another option is to install a third-party tool like WindowBlinds, which allows you to turn your Windows 11 into a modern version of XP.
