The reason for the malfunction of Megafon on the morning of January 24 was a ddos attack on carpet against the operator, carried out by a group of “hackers with political motivations” (Ti army of Ukraine). This was reported by a source of Forbes in the field of cybersecurity.

The interlocutor of the publication said the attack “was effective and there was a degradation of services in the international interface.”

A carpet attack is a type of ddos attack that is carried out simultaneously in many Red IP addresses, explained Evgeniy Pudovkin, technical director of the Telecom Exchange integrator, in a conversation with Forbes. According to him, such an attack is difficult to detect, since traditional monitoring systems often analyze only the load on individual IP and not in the entire network as a whole.

Hackivists constantly use carpet ddos attacks when telecommunications attack, says Mikhail Khlebunov, product director of the cybersecurity software developer Servicepipe. He states that “it is precisely this type of attack the most effective, that is, the one that causes the unavailability or degradation of services.”

Previously, on January 24, there was a massive Runet failure. Problems between the subscribers of Megafon, Yota, Mts, T2 and Beeline were observed, as well as among the users of many services, including Telegram, WhatsApp and Twitch.

Roskomnadzor informed RB.RU that the Public Communications Network Monitoring and Management Center (TSMU SSOP, owned by RKN) recorded a failure in MegaFon infrastructure. The regulator press service clarified that problems “in the foreign connections of Megafon with European communication networks” were observed. The SSOP did not detect any failure in the networks of other operators.

The MegaFon RB.RU press service said that “the possible problems with access to certain foreign Internet resources occurred for reasons that escape the operator control.”

The last large -scale failure of the Russian Internet occurred on January 14. That day, the subscribers of MTS, Beeline, Rostelecom, T2 and other operators reported on a low network performance. The RKN described the problems as an “interruption of short -term connectivity.”
