When a film is shown on the screens named Stephen Soderberg, a director who gave us “eleven friends of Ocean”, you always wait for something new, interesting and unusual.
With the film “Presence”, which was released in Russian cinemas, everything turned out to be different. You might think that it might happen to the film that collected 88% of “freshness” on Rotten Tomatoes? Critics are delighted, everyone is happy.
And I will tell you that this is not so. This movie is an empty shell, a prolonged psychological thriller, which, despite its atmosphere, turns out to be extremely boring and almost unlodious.
We have already watched the novelty and hasten to share impressions.
A horror movie on the face of a ghost? Sounds fresh
What is the film about: Rebecca, Chris and their children Tyler and Chloe are an ordinary family who is difficult to cope with their designs. Soon after moving to a new house, they all begin to feel the presence of the otherworldly.
And this time the viewer performs in the most otherworldly roles.
The main idea of the film is the clash of reality and the sweat of the outside world, which, as it seems, promises an intriguing and multilayer narrative. It is also stated that the auditorium is now becoming a turning point, thereby showing the very ghost, an unstoped observer.
However, the “presence” literally increased the interest of the viewer throughout the first 30 minutes. We all know that Sodaberg loves to work with electricity, set mysterious unusual rhythms and experiment with visual observation. But here he crossed the line, and instead of creating tension and atmosphere, he created a film that seems slowly inciting a fire, which does not flare up.
The plot of the film is so slow that each turn is not a revelation, but an empty movement that does not lead to anything. We are preparing a story about a girl and her family, who is faced with inexplicable events in her house, but almost everything she does, walks around the rooms, talks with other characters and from time to time scares shadows. Still periodically scandalit.
The lack of speakers and actions makes the film boring after 40 minutes. If the acting game Julia Fox and Lucy Lew was not acting, the film could be called completely lifeless.
The disappointment of the picture lies in the fact that she tries to be something deep and philosophical, but does not go further than superficial thoughts about life and death. All that remains the viewer is unresolved images, confusing dialogs and a banal game with mysticism.
The ghost in itself, which is pursuing the heroine, has neither character nor motives – its presence in history is so abstract and impersonal that the question of why it exists does not matter. This is just an empty place that is performed without leaving an answer.
How do you like such a ghost that for the entire 1.5-hour timing moved 3-4 items and closed the door? Scary? Just incredible!
The first spectators noted that the “presence” has its atmosphere. However, this is rather a problem than dignity. The atmosphere of the film is something dull and prolonged, where each movement of the camera hints that something is about to happen: even the tense music plays in a pair of scenes. But nothing happens.
Everything stretches to infinity, and at some point you begin to understand that without waiting for the climax, you just drowned in this obscurantist.
Of course, it is impossible not to note the game of Julia Fox, whose heroine, despite the limited plot, still brings some dynamics. However, even her efforts cannot return the film that life of life that could make the picture a little interesting. Lucy Lew, despite his charisma, is also not able to raise the level that actually stands still.
For understanding, we tell all the short cinema (this is not a spoiler): 1.5 actors go from home and periodically swear, the ghost is hanging from the room to the room, only an hour watching what is happening and sometimes hiding in the closet. Vigorous, scary, dynamic? Of course not.
This is a triumph of despondency, which cannot and does not even try to hook the viewer’s attention with absolutely anything.
Monotony and longing is the main “feature” of the film
A long silence, a complete misunderstanding of what is happening, leads to irritation. This film may be liked by those who are looking for in cinema not so much for the sake of entertainment, but for the sake of philosophical reflection on being. But to expand the environment, “presence” can be a real test.
Soderberg does not risk, does not lead us out of everyday life and, ultimately, creates not a new look at the genre, but simply an empty movie that is unlikely to remain in memory.
Budget paintings, apparently, are also important. From locations – different rooms of not a very large house. They are repeated many times, nothing changes in the background. What exactly should hook the viewer’s gaze is unknown.
Meaningless garbage

“Presence” is a film that does not live up to expectations. Soderberg tried to create something unusual, but instead of a tense thriller, we got a boring and protracted picture that only torments nervousness and does not bring illness.
This film can be safely called formal ambitiousness, which does not find its embodiment on the screen. Go by, garbage.
