Traditional methods such as electron microscopy allow you to visualize synaptic compounds, but cannot measure the transmitted signals. Another common method, the electrode “patch clamp”, only works with a small number of cells, although it corrects even the weakest signals. The new chip contains a micro -compatible electrode 4,096, which makes it possible to monitor thousands of neurons and interactions at the same time.

As a result, the chip has allowed successfully monitoring the activity of 3,600 neurons, almost 90% of the tested cells.

Despite significant progress, researchers acknowledge that it is still too far to fully map the human brain. There are about 86 billion neurons in the human brain, each of which has an average of 35 formations, which forms a complex network with trillions of connections.

The next step of the team is the adaptation of technology for use in the live brain. If this is successful, the discovery can lead to new developments in the field of artificial intelligence and neuro interfaces.
