The BBC experiment was attended by 10 people who regulated the brightness of the 2017 MacBook Pro with LCD and viewed the BBC Sounds website in light and dark mode. Surprisingly, 80% of users used a dark regime, sometimes consuming more energy than bright mode, while significantly increased the brightness.
Since LCD screens do not save energy by showing darker colors, the study emphasizes that real energy savings depend on the technology of the user’s screen and behavior. Although OLED screens can reduce energy consumption 3-9% (or full brightness up to 47%), most laptops and tablets are still used by LCD screens, which “limited the advantages of the dark regime in terms of energy consumption.
