Google announced that it is now allowing third-party payment systems for in-app purchases in its Surveillance Area (EEA), including the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. This applies to non-gaming programs.

In this case, the commission fee was 3% lower than through the company’s built-in services. In 99% of eligible cases, a 12% fee will be charged when a customer completes a transaction through a third-party payment processor, compared to 15% through the Google Play billing system.

Earlier Council of Europe on the use of digital marketplace laws, requiring IT companies to allow third-party in-app payment methods.

It will enter into force in 2023. If companies do not comply with it, they face a turnover penalty of 10% of their revenue in Europe.
