Using the example of Danio fish larvae, the researchers found that neuromodulator serotonin controls the power of swimming depending on conditions. Neurons in the brain area are called as pre -Rsal shelf, receive visual information and decide how much serotonin will be allocated to adjust the fish efforts.

In an experiment on virtual reality, scientists observed that these neurons started to work only after the fish swim. During swimming, the activity of the neurons is suppressed and when the fish stops swimming and starts to swim on the inertia, the activity increases sharply – this allows neurons to receive and analyze data about the movement rate.

These discoveries help better understand how the brain regulates behavior and adaptation, which is important to examine moods and diseases such as depression.
