Now, data centers in the United States consume approximately 33 GW electricity and are spent on 4 GW AI. By 2035, the total energy demand from data centers can grow to 176 GW and the AI system will consume 123 GW-30 times more.
The problem is that the construction of data centers is faster than the development of energy networks. Some major projects are already planning centers with a capacity of up to 5 GW, such as five million houses. However, it can take up to 7 years to connect to networks and create new power plants – even longer.
The situation is heavier with increasing prices for equipment materials and metal, cement and other resources.
Deloitte has three possible solutions: technological innovations (for example, more energy efficient server), a change in regulation and large -scale investments.
