According to historian Vasily Novikov, some of the mounds in Gnezdovo were destroyed in the mid -10th century. Probably this was by the order of the princess Olga, who controlled Russia on behalf of her youngest son Svyatoslav. Archaeologists believe that the princess fights the dynasty and power of the Local nobility on an important trade on the way to “Varangians to Greeks”. By tearing the mounds, Olga, who symbolized the connection of the clans with the world, deprived the rivals of their authorities and rights against the region.

Dozens of tombs were investigated in the nesting: Both the cream and tombs, some of the ruins were transferred to other places. Scientists say that the destruction of mounds did not occur for economic needs – the land was needed by the residents later, which confirmed the version of the political decision.

Since the written resources of the 10th century are not almost preserved, it continues to be the only way to find archeology details. In 1949, they found the oldest inscriptions in Russian. New excavations continue and, according to researchers, can shed light on the early history of the Russian and support annuals.
