Modern search engines increasingly show canned answers based, among other things, on data from Wikipedia. The media writes that young people are increasingly looking for information on YouTube and TikTok, where content is “delivered faster and easier.”
Reduced traffic could negatively impact the community of volunteers who edit the articles and the donations the foundation depends on. Miller points out the irony of the situation: AI models are trained with Wikipedia data, but ultimately deprive it of part of the audience.
To fix this, Wikimedia is calling on companies that use their content to help direct users back to the site. The foundation is also working on new rules regarding data use.
However, the organization does not oppose artificial intelligence.
