Due to sanctions, Russian restaurants are forced to replace imported seafood and fish with Russian ones. This led to an increase in the prices of domestic products by 1.5 times.

Russian restaurateurs complain about rising cost of seafood

Representatives of the Russian restaurant business told RIA about this. According to the co-founder of the Erti, Burka, Khinkali and Eclairs restaurants in Rostov-on-Don, Gadzhi Zulumkhanov, the cost of food has increased due to a “very sharp increase in the price of everything”.

The businessman pointed out that under the current conditions, the convenience of opening a seafood restaurant “is falling more and more.”

“In some cases he [рост стоимости] amounted to 40-50%. As we cannot increase the retail price by this amount, we had to look for alternative options”, said the restaurateur.

Industry officials report that changes in supply chains and rising prices have affected restaurant menus. At Pinskiy&Co, according to the holding’s press service, “imported salmon was replaced by salmon from Murmansk, shrimp imported from abroad – with those from the Far East, French oysters – with those from Sakhalin and Crimea.”

According to the company, this did not affect the taste of the dishes: “All products are not inferior to imported analogues, and some even surpass them in taste.”

Gadzhi Zulumkhanov added that the prices of domestic seafood “have always been a problem”, that is, imported products used to be cheaper than domestic ones. The cost of Russian products was expected to decline after imports closed, “but unfortunately the opposite happened.”

In connection with this trend, according to the restaurateur, many establishments in Russia are now considering the possibility of creating their own production.
