The Ministry of Industry and Commerce is going to replace the co-pilot in passenger and cargo aircraft with a virtual one and thus reduce the cost of its operation. The department announced a tender worth 2.9 billion rubles for the development of such technology by the end of 2024, reports Vedomosti, citing data from the public procurement portal.
The client refers to the analysis of the latest scientific results in the field of the use of artificial intelligence in aviation. According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, already in the 2030s it will be possible to switch to a single-member crew on commercial aircraft.
To implement this, it is necessary to change the information and control field of the cockpit, develop the technical design of the “virtual co-pilot” and integrate the aircraft with this technology into the air traffic control system. To comply with the last point, it will be necessary to introduce “promising means of communication”, as well as ensure the cybersecurity of on-board equipment.
The Contractor shall develop technology for commercial aircraft. This category includes both cargo and passenger aircraft. Specific models where the technology will be applied are not specified.
Lawyers interviewed by the newspaper warn that according to international safety standards – the US Federal Aviation Regulations (FAA) and the recommendations of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) – there must be at least two people in the cabin .
