Security Researcher from Sick Codes showed during the Def Con conference in Las Vegas, how DOOM works on a John Deere tractor.

To do this, he had to get access to a modified Linux on a John Deere 4240. The whole process took months of painstaking work.

Work demo:

In fact, this exploit could help manufacturers bypass software blocks that prevent them from repairing tractors themselves. He was able to obtain 1.5 GB of data logs that could be used to detect and diagnose problems.

There is also a way to access the system by simply soldering controllers that are especially important to another tractor board. Unfortunately, getting root access isn’t easy without hard hardware, but Sick Codes told Wired that “it’s possible to develop a tool based on vulnerabilities to free the jailbreak.” [The Verge]
