Microsoft Raymond Chen talked about an unusual problem that an Engineer had with the company during the Windows XP days.

Microsoft has elected that when playing a Janet Jackson Rhythm Nation video, some Windows XP laptops would come out of the building. Moreover, there were cases when a song was played on one laptop, and another laptop broke down, which was just nearby.

For a long time we could not understand what this problem is connected with. It turned out that the Rhythm Nation track had a frequency that matched the resonant frequency of the laptop’s hard drive.

Chen did not name laptop or hard drive makers. He only noted that the failure extended to some of the 5400 rpm vaults.

The laptop manufacturer solved the problem by choosing an audio filter that could detect and eliminate the resonant frequency during any kind of music. [Microsoft]
