A year ago, the director’s cut of the film “Ilya Muromets” was published on the Mosfilm YouTube channel in a restored neural network video and 4K format.
The original 1956 version was dedicated to one of the issues of the 1994 American television series MST3K, where not only technical flaws were ridiculed, but also production problems associated with filming films. Now the Americans have a different look at the “new” that I even used on Blu-ray discs.
One of Polygon’s writers called the film’s remaster stunned and “that the film is actually possible”:
Ptushko’s film is beautifully reproduced to brilliant colors and conflicts. An incredible setting with lush flowers and Elysian set design makes everything possible in a painting at the Louvre. Who met the movie in MST3K. But, despite the fame, “Ilya Muromets” could perceive and respect him as a major artistic achievement.
Women in history can be considered characters recognized by today’s standards: they are crying victims or skinny mistresses. But this dynamic is no different from many Hollywood epics of the 50s, and it’s worth looking deeper here at the interests these characters show in captivity.
One of the episodes tells about Sabrina, Muromets’ love interest and his closest wife. In a beautiful collection in the style of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”, she sings a love song in the vicinity of forest animals. It’s an easy target in MST3K’s assessment due to its overly melodramatic and cloying nature. But it’s also a beautiful, ethereal entertainment in history that centers around male prowess and focus.
