Roskosmos has successfully tested the so-called “Tsar Engine”. At the moment, it is the most powerful in the world and will be installed on the Soyuz-5 launch vehicle. The first launch of this rocket is scheduled for 2023.
Roskosmos reported on the successful tests of the RD-171MV engine. This unit was called the “king engine”, because at the moment it is the most powerful in the world – its thrust is more than 800 tons. The RD-171MV runs on environmentally friendly naphthyl-oxygen fuel.
During the nine fire tests carried out, the “king-engine” worked for 1461 seconds and confirmed the inherent characteristics. The tests passed regularly, he noted in Roskosmos.
The RD-171MV engine will power the Soyuz-5 launch vehicle. The first rocket launch is planned for 2023. The engine manufacturer, NPO Energomash, is currently assembling another RD-171MV, which is being installed on the Yenisei super-heavy missiles. The first launch of these missiles is expected to take place in 2028.
