Throughout the year, the number of users of the contactless payment service Mir Pay has multiplied by 20. The National System of Payment Cards (NSPK) did not reveal absolute figures.
This summer, Mir cards were added to the application five times more, the number of monthly payments increased seven times, Vedomosti reported.
Using the app, users can pay with their smartphone using NFC technology. It is only available for Android device owners. Now more than 100 banks can connect Mir cards to the service.
On April 1, 347.1 million bank cards were issued in Russia, of which more than 129 million were Mir cards. The rest of the part is shared between Visa and Mastercard.
Since February, payment by QR code has been actively developed through the Bank of Russia’s Fast Payment System (FPS) and its SBPey application. Banks record multiple growth in demand for this payment method in the second quarter compared to the first: the number of transactions, according to the bank, increased by 3-5 times, and the volume of payments – by 2 to 2 ,5 times.
Several bank representatives are sure that the two services will compete in the future if the NFC function and payment via smartphone appear on SBPey. Other experts say that SBPey and Mir Pay will compete only indirectly as they use different payment technologies.
Also, Mir Pay only works on Android devices, while SBPay is available on both Android and iOS.
