Microplastics, ie pieces of plastic less than 5 mm in diameter, are literally ubiquitous. From recent research, it has become clear that it can even be found in human blood.
A recent study examining the impact of microplastics in homes on people in 29 countries found that two populations were most at risk. These are small children and people living in low-income countries. True, experts, after analyzing the chemical composition of microplastics in homes, came to the conclusion that in reality the risk to human health is still very low.
The problem right now is that scientists still know very little about the toxic effects of the substances used in the manufacture of plastics.
After analyzing the dust collected in the homes of residents of 29 countries, a team of experts identified the most common synthetic polymer fibers. Among them were polyester, polyamide, polyvinyls, polyurethane, polyethylene.
Experts also found that low-income countries have more microplastics, with an average of 3,518 fibers being deposited per square meter per day. At the same time, in middle- and high-income countries – 1268 and 1257 fibers per square meter, respectively.
