The code found in the internal system files shows that iOS 16 is able to detect fake AirPods. Some of these fake models are identical copies of the original AirPods and can even work some system features like auto pairing and battery indicator.

With the new version of the operating system, iPhones and iPads will warn users when trying to pair fake AirPods. These earphones cannot be tested as real AirPods and may not behave as expected.

The “Learn More” button should direct the user to a support article on Apple’s website with more details on how to identify the original AirPods.

The alert will also prompt the user with the “Don’t Connect” option. However, at least for now, there are no signs that Apple will stop these fake AirPods from working with iPhones and iPads. The system was created specifically to detect fake AirPods trying to emulate the official Apple protocol, so you shouldn’t worry about other earphones.
