Fluorouracil creams are used to treat skin cancers and actinic keratoses. They are also used to get rid of warts and treat vitiligo in children.
It turns out that such creams are deadly for dogs. 20 animals are known to have died. It has been reported that dogs show signs of poisoning even half an hour after taking fluorouracil: vomiting, tremors, convulsions, shortness of breath, and diarrhea. If the animal is not treated, it will die within six hours. It is dangerous even for dogs to play with cream packaging.
There are concerns that fluorouracil might harm cats as well.
