Communications Minister Fábio Faria said on Thursday (22), SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet activated at a school in AmazonasLocated in Careiro da Várzea. Gwyne Shotwell, the company’s COO, attended the event in person, while CEO Elon Musk attended via video call.

Starlink can provide internet to schools in the Amazon region

By tele time, activation of internet was a donation from billionaire. Faria joined SpaceX in the United States in November 2021 to close a partnership. In May, Musk and President Jair Bolsonaro announced an agreement to connect 19,000 schools in the region.

On this occasion, Faria reported “Internet will be available in all primary and high schools in Amazonas” via satellite. “We’re here to visit and measure the speed of the internet, and we found it to be faster than 4G, so I wanted to thank Starlink for that,” he said. So far, there has been no official announcement of a finalized agreement between SpaceX and the federal government.

On Twitter, Musk celebrated the connection of schools in the region via Starlink and, in response to one social network user, said that “education is the way out of poverty” and “it is internet access that makes education happen.”

Starlink can now be signed by Brazilians via the company’s official website. Although the total cost of equipment and similar installations could exceed R$3,000, the subscription had a price cut in August.
