During Samsung Tech Day 2022, an event held this Thursday (6), Samsung SSD ecosystem release roadmap. In the spotlight, the brand announced its plans to launch 1000 cell layer V-NAND chip storage unitsamount to offer 1,000 Terabytes.

According to the information, Innovation must reach market by 2030. Prior to this date, initial samples must be sent to corporate customers such as Team Group.

Storage units for data centers

technology 1,000TB SSD will benefit companies providing cloud storage and data center services. Big tech like Google, Microsoft and Meta will be the main buyers of these storage units.

On the other hand, earlier this year Micron and Sk Hynix announced components with 232 and 238 cell layers, respectively. Technically, this could reduce the cost of manufacturing SSDs with Terabyte storage and make them more accessible to the general public.

However, this will still depend on global supply and demand for the products. In addition, the current world economic situation may cause companies to reduce their investment in research and delay the introduction of new technologies.

With 1000TB SSDs used in data centers, disks with less storage may become more affordable in the future.

What’s New in SSD in 2022

Also at this Thursday’s conference (6), Samsung highlighted: Eighth-generation SSDs with V-NAND technology to be released in 2022. The new 512GB drives promise 42% bit density improvement, the highest among tri-level cell (TLC) products.

1TB SSD models will be available to customers by the end of this year. Also, the brand announced Ninth-generation units with V-NAND chips are already in development and mass production is expected to begin in 2024.
