Arne Schonbom is the head of the Federal Office of Cyber Security (BSI), responsible for protecting government communications since 2016. German media accused him of liaising with people related to Russian special services. The Ministry of Interior is investigating the allegations against him. But he has already confirmed that he was fired.
Schonbom came under scrutiny after Jan Bomermann, the host of one of Germany’s most popular late-night television shows, drew attention to possible ties to a Russian company in a previous position.
Prior to leading BSI, Schonbom helped found and run the Cyber Security Council Germany, a private body that advises businesses and policymakers on cybersecurity issues. According to the BBC, one of the association’s members was a cybersecurity company called Protelion, a “subsidiary of the Russian InfoTeKS”.
