The research team found that the more social the monkeys were, the more beneficial microbes they had in their bodies. Bacteria can be transmitted with a simple touch and provide benefits including a stronger immune response and an anti-inflammatory effect.

The monkeys who spent less time with their friends found more bacteria that cause human diseases such as streptococcus and pneumonia.
