Cupertino has been releasing iPad models with a backlog of power for several years now. Unfortunately, potential chips have been implemented Apple M1/M2 in mobile OS is not yet possible.

At one of the recent presentations, a large professional application for color correction and video editing Da Vinci’s Determination for iPad, and today the utility has finally appeared in the App Store.

I decided to test the program to understand how effective the application was from Blackmagic Design and whether it is convenient to mount videos on an Apple tablet.

For tests, a new, but far from the most powerful, basic 10th generation iPad is used.

Which Devices Can I Install DaVinci Resolve On?

The developers did not limit the range of users and allowed utilities to be installed on most current Apple tablets. The only detection is the presence of a system detection version, you can only install the program if you have iPadOS 16 and newer.

Suitable for models with processors A12 Bionic or higher. If you too are confused about Apple’s line of tablets, here is a detailed list:

iPad mini 5/6
ipad 09.08.10
iPad Air 3/4/5
iPad Pro all models 11″ and 12.9″

When compared with the list of devices that can be installed iPadOS 16basic iPad 5/6/7 and iPad Pro 9.7″ and 10.2″. Of course, you won’t be able to download DaVinci Resolve on your iPhone.

Immediately visible “Neplovskiy” approach. To do this, you need to hook a wide range of users. They allow the use of the iron application where it allows, and not where marketers want.

Application features are slightly different depending on the tablet. Accumulation with a chip Apple M1 and now you get a full set of features (editing in 4K resolution), and the rest of the gadgets work only with video in HD resolution. 1920 x 1080 drop.

Required for installation about 2 GB on the drive. In this case, you can work with source files directly on the connected drive and the utility will not cache them in the iPad’s memory.

After several hours of use, the occupied space on the tablet’s drive hardly increased.

Main features of the application interface

The developers have slightly simplified the cumbersome professional tool to adapt to the small screen of the tablet.

From 7 sections of the desktop version in contact Da Vinci’s Determination only 2 tabs left: assembly (for mounting projects) and Colour (for painting rollers).

Less popular and more professional sections would be difficult to implement on the iPad, but it is enough for most users of apple gadgets.

The main mounting tab is practically the same as its counterpart in the desktop version of the application. You should not add to remember the location of elements or bind to something new.

The open block contains a file manager and a preview window for displaying video. Below is a composite timeline. The interface offers little customization, you can use the opportunity while reducing the risk and vice versa. So you can follow the link to 7-8 views by reducing the preview window.

The only note here is a simplified view of the full timeline, which is not customizable and remains as schematic when you configure the bottom area. With a large deviation from the norm, it is difficult to navigate.

Project export window

A simple project of a few distant videos and a few audio tracks is quick and easy to put together. Titles, transitions and effects are added in a few seconds.

Then you can send the entire project for export, select the quality and availability of codecs. Even on the base iPad model from the source collection with external storage, it’s fast enough.

The application cannot be minimized during rendering

Here we run into the features of multitasking on iPadOS. An application with a resource-intensive process running cannot be minimized, the system will immediately pause it and rendering will be interrupted. Do not return Da Vinci’s Determinationlock the iPad screen and even use another app on top of the video editor, as well as run the export effects from the start.

The claims here are exclusively against the Cupertinos. It works the same way, for example, LumaFusion, iMovie and other editors. Even the banal use of data in the application Files interrupted in the iOS/iPadOS background.

Unrivaled color grading capabilities

Not everyone knows that Da Vinci’s Determination it became possible to subsequently use the tool for color correction.

Of course, the developers did not have the opportunity to deprive users of the main competitive advantage of their software, and in the mobile versions of the applications there is an almost full-fledged section for painting videos.

I am not a professional user Da Vincibut most of the familiar and surviving tools were found in mobile versions of applications.

A couple of observations with a slight color correction are processed without problems on a tablet with a processor A14 Bionic. Once the application still crashed without saving a couple of last actions.

Sports activities that are known to all owners of PC failure: install first, then paint. I’m sure the models iPad Air/Pro with a chip M1/M2 everything will be just perfect.

Keyboard, mouse and Apple Pencil for work Optional

Checked the work of applications with all available accessories

apple pencil – a useless tool when working with Da Vinci’s Determination. On the one hand, it is not surprising, because this is not software for assimilation of photos and work with a schedule. But on the other hand, a large number of small interface elements, menus and stylus tools could be a good helper.

It is possible to control in a video editor with a style, but it does not give any advantages over the control of the senses. For example, while viewing interesting files on a PC, the cursor allows you to quickly play the part of the video that it hits. You expect similar actions when working with Apple Pencil. However, the style only offers to drag the file while moving.

Or, when working on the timeline, it would be convenient to cut a part of the video with a vertical stroke. However, you have to choose the right tool, just like when you work.

Keyboard Helps only users who have mastered shortcuts. If you have been active in Da Vinci’s Determination On a Mac, you can perform all basic actions with compatible keyboard shortcuts.

I’m used to mounting in Final Pro and many actions in applications do not match. But with the standard macOS options, you can immediately see a list of available keyboard shortcuts.

To do this, as in any application, you should hold down the button Command.

A quick preview when a cursor is detected on an object is only possible with a mouse.

Mouse turns out to be really useful in a video editor. It is the most suitable accessory for Da Vinci’s Determinationthis is how you get as close as possible with the desktop experience.

With the manipulator, you can navigate the cursor inside the sample, quickly preview effects or transitions, more precise positioning on the timeline, and other features of the video editor on your computer.

The only downside is the odd evaluation of iPadOS’ built-in cursor “sticking” mechanism. To some buttons and menus, it is magnetized, and the rest stubbornly sofas. It is a little unusual to manage in such a protocol.

What in the end?

Comparison of apps on iPad Pro and MacBook with M1 processor

Utility in the App Store is free. There are no subscriptions, no need to pay for the company’s proprietary cloud services or anything else.

Luckily, they didn’t go down the Photoshop for iPad route and ended up with a full-fledged utility with most of the necessary desktop features.

There is only one in-app purchase that unlocks a full range of useful features. I had to fiddle with the app for 10-15 minutes to find paid options inside. Purchase benefits when choosing effects, transitions or titles for videos. It would be more logical for paid tools to be immediately highlighted in the menu.

The price tag for the full version is not the most democratic – 8 990 rub. But I can say with confidence that the free features of the program are limited to most non-professional users.

I still can’t understand why the Cupertinos themselves are missing out on a specific niche. Long Existing Utility Final Pro for installation on apple computers was supposed to be the first similar application on ipad even with the release of the first tablets on a chip M1.

Cupertino first “slept through” the appearance LumaFusion in the App Store, and then they themselves announced and implemented an early release Da Vinci’s Determination for iPadOS.

It seems that Apple is not going to or is not going to deal with software for its mobile platform. Yes, the niche is quite narrow, but Mac editors are thinking about switching to Da VinciAfter all, already now some of the tasks can be implemented in an application on a tablet, which is a more mobile device.

Yes, and novice editors will soon begin to master the utility from Blackmagic Designbecause it is already presented on macOS, Window, Linux and iPadOS.

Da Vinci’s Determination for iPad there were only pleasant impressions. This is a great tool for beginners and non-professional editors, which supports a large number of current models of Apple tablets.

I recommend trying the utility even for those who “glue” a presentation of family videos a couple of times a year or. In a couple of hours, you can use not only a computer, but also an iPad for such needs.
