The disadvantage of nuclear energy is the formation of radionuclides. The nuclear industry needs effective methods to clean water from them.
Specialists of the Federal Research Center “Komi Scientific Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences” and colleagues from other universities were looking for such a method. They discovered that Sosnowski’s hogweed could be used to create an effective sorbent for radioactive materials.
The scientists created a nanocarbon material from its biomass by adding natural and technical lignin. Experiments confirmed that the new nanocarbon adsorbent holds uranium well. In addition, the material can adsorb T-2 mycotoxin, a waste product of mold fungi.
