Today, Apple confirms a surprise presentation or simply announces new Macs.
All forces in the company are thrown into the speedy release of the first version, augmented by reality, the result of which may be the continuation of the year in the spring-summer. So we do not expect any “breakthroughs” from today’s announcements. In addition, the company is in a hurry to close the gestalt before the end of winter, protecting them through their own fault. Many have forgotten about him, but not us.
So what we wait?
1. 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro with M2 Pro and M2 Max
According to all the statistics, the new generation of firmware will undergo only configuration changes – that is, there will be an upgrade of the hardware, but no more. Which is logical, the last redesign by Apple standards happened quite recently.
The main new difference between Pro and M2 Pro should be in the M2 Pro and M2 Max processors. If the company does not violate the engineering principles of creating chips set by the previous generation, then we will “predict” their performance in advance.
The M2 processor is faster than the M1 by 11.5% in single-core workloads and 19.5% in multi-core workloads. And its video chips overtake M1 by an average of 35%. respectively, M2 Pro and M2 Max should become faster than M1 Pro on average up to 20% in single-core and up to 40% in multi-core tasks – after all, they will have more processor cores than in the “regular” M2 (at least 2).
We are waiting for an even bigger jump in M2 Pro and Max in terms of 3D performance: up to 60% in Pro and up to 100 percent or more in Max.
Here it is worth remembering one point. Last fall, Apple expected the Mac version of the legendary heavily optimized No Man’s Sky game to end before the end of the year. But this did not happen, unlike the also announced at the presentation and successfully released Resident Evil 8: Village. Some assumptions suggested that game performance on M1 processors was not originally designed by Apple, and that assumption coincided with the release with the release of the first Macs with M2 Pro and Max processors. Most likely it will.
Also in the new MacBooks, the amount of RAM can increase – up to 48 GB for the M2 Pro processors and up to 96 GB for the M2 Max. The capacity of the SSD drive is unlikely to move, here we are waiting for overclocking from 512 GB in the basic configuration and up to 8 TB in the expected trim levels.
Other than that, it’s not worth the wait. Unless laptops finally got a normal HDMI connector with support for 2.1 and higher, without which they could not display a picture on external screens in 4K and at a frequency of 120 Hz. Also, most likely, there will be Wi-Fi 6E.
In the end, “firmware” with serious delays in gaming and the discovery of a long-standing weak point of Mac computers – 3D performance.
2. Mac Pro on M2 Max and/or M2 Ultra
There is a possibility that a new Mac Pro will be announced today. So far, this is the last computer on Intel processors remaining in the Apple line. Because of him, the company objectively did not have time to realize its own promise, which covered in 2020 – the end of the transition of all Macs to Apple Silicon processors by the end of 2022.
Very little is known about the Mac Pro on the M2, and the rumors paint a strange picture. The computer may lose much of its “modularity”, which is already small. After all, the vast majority of PCI hardware from the x86-64 world will not be compatible with the new architecture. Also https://www.iphones.ru/iNotes/studiya-lunar-animation-rasskazala-kak-ispolzuet-mac-pro-v-3d-animaciy-03-24-2021, the possibility of self-upgrading RAM may disappear.
Instead, Apple installed the M2 Max processor or even the M2 Ultra. Obama has no problem overtaking the previous generation on Intel Xeon processors in both single-core and multi-core difficulties. The performance of video chips can also come close or even overtake the top-end configuration (Radeon Pro W6800X Duo 64 GB) in a previous generation Mac Pro.
However, it’s not entirely clear what the new $4,999 “tower” has to offer for a high degree of frequency-demanding that Mac Studio on the same processors starting at $1,999 could not offer.
3. Anything else?
A 15-inch MacBook Air with an M2 Pro processor is unlikely, but remains in the company’s plans for this year. Upgrading 24-inch iMacs to M2 processors is delayed until the fall. An augmented reality review is even less likely – for the sake of this, Apple would have held a full-fledged presentation with invites a week before the start.
Other company devices are also unlikely to receive updates.
So we are waiting today for either a “firmware” or a new “grater”.
