609 people participated in the new Stanford University study. They recorded all the food they ate and physical activity data for one year. All participants followed the same low-fat or low-carb diet.

It turns out that people who consume the same amount of calories can both gain and maintain weight. As a result, scientists have identified several biomarkers that predict how a person will lose weight and maintain it over the long term. Biomarkers have been associated with the vital activity of gut bacteria. It also turned out that the ratio of exhaled oxygen to exhaled carbon dioxide is important. If the ratio is low, the body will burn more fat, and if it is high, then it will burn more carbohydrates.
