Microsoft has announced the closure of the virtual reality social platform AltspaceVR. The project was already close to closing in 2017.
AltspaceVR will cease operations on March 10, 2023, according to a company announcement.
“The decision was not easy for us because this platform, which was loved by many, gave people the opportunity to discover themselves, express themselves and find a community,” the press release reads.
Microsoft notes that it will now focus on the Mesh mixed reality platform. The company aims to shape a project that will “provide the broadest possible opportunities for all participants, including creators, partners and customers” and that will also create jobs around the world.
Earlier this week, the corporation said it would lay off 10,000 employees. According to Windows Central, the entire AltspaceVR team will be removed as part of a personnel change.
In 2017, the developers at the AltspaceVR startup reported that the project would cease to exist after “unforeseen financial difficulties,” but the company later announced that it would continue to operate. This was possible thanks to Windows, which bought the VR social network.
