Some houseplants are dangerous as they can cause burns to a child’s eyes or skin. So be careful and watch what your kids are doing.
One of the most dangerous plants is dieffenbachia. If you chew part of the stem, you may temporarily lose your ability to speak due to swelling of the mouth and throat. And exposure to the juice of this plant causes irritation to the eyes, nose and skin. Other poisonous plants include caladium, flamingo flower (Anthurium), Swiss cheese plant (Monstera), peace lily (Spathiphyllum), ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia), philodendron and pothos (Epipremnum).
Amaryllis and related plants contain lycorine. This toxic substance can cause abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
Spider plants (Chlorophytum comosum), African violets (Saintpaulia), Boston ferns (Nephrolepis exaltata), Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera), wax plants (Hoya), parlor palms (Chamaedorea elegans), radiator plants (Peperomia), prayer plants (Maranta) leuconeura), children’s tears (Soleirolia soleirolii).
