Russian dairy producers have begun to indicate the weight of the product, rather than its volume, on the packaging of drinking milk, cream and kefir. So, on store shelves in 2022 it was more common to find milk, on the packaging of which the weight of 1 kg was indicated instead of the volume of 1 thousand ml.

Analysts of the Prodazhi.rf service believe that manufacturers are trying to mask the decrease in their volume in this way, writes RBC.

Dairy farmers began to mask the decrease in its volume in the package with the inscription “1 l”

In 2022, there are more products that indicate weight instead of volume than in 2021. A kilogram of milk, due to its high density, occupies about 970 ml.

Analysts for the service have identified a trend indicating the packaging of liquid dairy products instead of the volume in liters of mass in kilograms after analyzing receipts and data from open sources. However, specific figures on the volume of such products are not disclosed.

According to RBC, in particular, dairy products are labeled in this way under the brands Domik v derevne, Bezhin Lug, Viola. Packages can indicate a kilogram, 1000 g and its volume in milliliters, and in some cases only weight.

The general director of the National Union of Milk Producers, Artem Belov, believes that there is no mass transition to the practice of indicating the mass of 1 kg on milk packages instead of 1 liter on the market. But he conceded that some manufacturers may use such a marketing ploy to avoid raising prices during a crisis and to make the decline in the volume of goods less noticeable to buyers.
