The experimental browser uses the Google Blink engine. If Google tries to publish it on the App Store, the app will fail Apple’s review process. The company requires browsers on iOS and iPadOS to use the WebKit engine. This engine makes programs behave like Safari.

Google claims that the app is only an “experimental prototype to understand some aspects of performance on iOS” and that it “will not be made available to users and we will continue to comply with Apple’s policies.”

But Google’s pilot project could be a sign that the company expects changes to Apple’s platform rules.
