The speaker emits sounds of different frequencies and the robot’s microphone picks them up as they bounce off walls. The team’s algorithm then analyzes the sound waves and creates a map with the dimensions of the room.
During testing, the researchers found that their method was still not as accurate as systems using larger, more expensive hardware. However, they hope to increase fidelity in future releases and eliminate the need for the system to reproduce sound. Instead, they want the robot to be able to rely on the sound of its propellers spinning.
