Birds evolved from a special group of dinosaurs – dromaeosaurus, or “running lizards.” But 66 million years ago, an asteroid hit our planet. And all the dinosaurs died. But some birds managed to survive.

Now scientists have several conjectures as to why the birds survived.

Modern birds do not have teeth, but instead have beaks. At the same time, some birds that lived in the time of the dinosaurs also had teeth. After the asteroid’s fall, these toothed birds became extinct, leaving many without teeth. Experts believe it was the lack of teeth that allowed the birds to survive. The fossils suggest that such birds may have eaten more plant foods and relied less on animal foods. This also gave the toothless birds an advantage, as many animal species became extinct after the disaster, and food can be found if you peck the ground and look for buried seeds or nuts there.

Still, maybe it’s just luck that the toothless birds survived. There is no definitive answer to this question yet.
