In the fourth quarter of 2022, shipments of x86 processors from all manufacturers, including Intel and AMD, were down 34% year-on-year and 19% quarterly, according to Mercury Research.

Global x86 processor shipments declined 34%, a 30-year record

This is a record for Mercury Research’s 30 years of conducting market analysis, PCMag writes.

The reasons were overstocks from retailers and vendors and low demand for PCs in the context of persistent inflation and the ongoing economic downturn.

Shipments for the year totaled 374 million (excluding ARM processors), which is 21% less compared to 2021. Revenue fell to $65 billion, 19% less than the previous year.

“While this seems very bleak, keep in mind that total revenue in the processor market in 2022 was still higher than in any other year except 2020 and 2021,” the researchers emphasize.

In Q4 2022, laptop shipments were also down more than ever year-over-year.

Intel has already warned investors that the first quarter of this year will be a difficult quarter for the chipmaker.

But AMD CEO Lisa Su said that in the second half of 2023, the company will return to its previous figure and even show signs of growth.
