“I think we need to get out of the habit of thinking all this unmanned stuff is connected to electric vehicles,” Martin said.

Eberghardt was CEO of Tesla, but Musk fired him in 2007. He said software development for self-driving electric vehicles was the least of his concerns while at the company.

Martin said he is “not a big fan” of self-driving cars, although he appreciates “safety-focused systems.” “I think it’s wrong to think of a car as a software platform like the iPhone. It’s different,” Martin said. “I have an iPhone and whenever I get a software update, there are always bugs… If a bug like this pops up in the software to control the car, for example the brakes or the steering wheel, it kills me.”
