The researchers also say the tipping point is approaching faster than expected. “Computer models simulating the dynamics of ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica often do not take into account the fact that melting will affect ocean processes, which in turn can affect the ice sheet and atmosphere,” the scientists said.
They suggest this irreversible process could begin as early as 1.8°C warming. The model showed that we can only prevent this rapid sea level rise by keeping the temperature rise below 1.5°C.
