This March 3 was an important milestone for the Murdo family, as Alex Murdo was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife and children.
Since the 1920s, the Murdo family has been a prominent legal force in the Low Country region of South Carolina. But that all changed when a string of deaths and other related controversies hit Alex Murdo and his family in the late 2010s following the suspicious death of his former housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield; the murders of his wife Maggie and their son Paul; and the tragic death of friend Paul Mallory Beach in a boat accident, Alex Murdo has been incarcerated since October 2021.
Now that Alex has been found guilty of killing Paul and Maggie, it’s time to get back to the dirty story.
That’s exactly what Netflix done away with The Murdo Murders: Southern Scandal. The three-part documentary series uncovers shocking revelations about the case and the traumatic events that led to and contributed to the family’s downfall.
History of hiding information about Paul Murdo
It’s no secret that Murdo; The notoriety in South Carolina meant they got away with a lot more than many thought they should have. But the extent to which Alex Murdo and his father Randolph went to protect the rebellious and restless Paul is irritating. Based on various stories from Paul Murdo’s former friends, including his ex-girlfriend Morgan Doughty, Paul apparently did what he wanted without any repercussions.
In particular, he drank excessively, presumably to cope with the pain of being the “black sheep” of the family. He felt, as his friends believed, that his mother favored his brother Buster over him, as Buster had followed in the footsteps of his ancestors, received a good education, and was looking for a job in the legal field.
On one particularly disturbing occasion, Doughty recalls, after a night of drinking, Paul insisted that he drive home in his own truck. She fell into a ditch, and before Doughty could dial 911, he stopped her and called his grandfather. Patriarch Murdo showed up with Alex and Paul’s mother Maggie, after which the trio cleared the car of the many guns and empty beer cans inside. Nothing came of the accident, presumably the events were covered up or masked by the police in cooperation with Murdo. Most shocking, however, was that Doughty recalled that the family seemed more concerned with hiding any gruesome evidence that might tarnish their reputation than with making sure the children were all right.
The coldness of Randolph Murdo
In the events that followed the boating accident that led to Beach’s death, the other parents present at the scene were understandably distraught. When Randolph Murdo was told by his mother about the seriousness of the situation and the importance of finding out what happened to Beach, he was surprised by his cool response.
“I’m pretty sure we know how this will end,” he replied dispassionately to her question. Then she saw that he was more concerned with protecting his grandson than with the young woman who probably died in the accident. Apparently, he had no interest in finding Beach’s body and showed no remorse for what happened to her. This mother and others said it was in Murdo’s best interest not to find Beach’s body because that would rule out the possibility of a murder charge.
Conversation missing from transcripts
In the documentary series, a distraught Anthony Cook remarked to police officers when they first arrived on the scene that “Paul Murdo killed my girlfriend.” However, this statement was completely omitted from any transcript that became known after the events.
Police Officer Michael Brock, who is listed on the title card as still with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), was the officer assigned to cover the first 24 hours of the incident. Meanwhile, another officer, Michael Paul Thomas, is said to have been a close friend of Alex Murdo’s brother, John Marvin Murdo. Doughty cheekily called him “Alex Murdo’s bitch”.
Emergency Engineer Analysis
An engineer who looked into what happened to the boat and the injuries of each of the teenagers on board, hired by Beech’s lawyer Mark Tinsley, confirmed that Connor Cook, who Paul said actually operated the boat, logically couldn’t be in it. position.
Based on the injuries he and Paul sustained, the engineer confirmed that Connor was unable to control the boat at the moment of impact. However, the family initially claimed that this was the case, ostensibly to save their son from legal trouble due to Beach’s accident and death.
There is evidence that Alex was at the scene of the murders of Paul and Maggie.
The most shocking revelation in the documentary series, which is central to the case currently in court, involves Alex’s claim that he was visiting his ailing parents at the time of Paul and Maggie’s murders. However, new evidence shows that he was indeed there at the time. Her voice can be heard in the video that was filmed at the kennel where the bodies of Maggie and Paul were found. In the ongoing legal battle, Alex now admits that he lied about this, blaming paranoia caused by drug use and addiction as the reason he lied about this crucial information. As revealed in the documentary series, Alex has been addicted to opioids for a long time.
Alex’s video and audio voices became decisive for the murder trial against him. Based on the timing, he would have placed Alex at the scene minutes before both family members died. However, Alex maintains his innocence, saying that he did not kill his wife or son.
