According to a recent interview with Valve’s technical designer Lawrence Young, the current version of the console handles today’s games just fine. More than 8,000 projects in the Steam catalog were tested for compatibility with the device, including resource-intensive AAA titles such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Elden Ring.

Young added that further optimization of the console’s software and operating system could yield additional performance gains. According to him, the console has the potential to maintain its performance over the current generation. That’s why Valve isn’t interested in releasing a new console in the short term.

Recall that Steam Deck was released in December 2021. Originally, a game console could only be purchased on a first come, first served basis. But in the fall of 2022, Valve fixed its main supply issues and the device is now available to everyone with just a 1-2 week wait.
