The Russian government has allocated about 300 billion rubles for the purchase of Russian airlines aircraft from foreign lessors. This was stated by the head of the Ministry of Transport Vitaly Savelyev, his words are quoted by Interfax.
Some of these funds, according to Savelyev, have already been used by Aeroflot to purchase 10 long-haul aircraft.
The airline itself reported in 2022 that it was buying 18 aircraft from foreign lessors: eight long-haul Airbus A330s and ten Boeing 777s. All of them were used on the basis of leasing allowed by Western sanctions. Other aircraft in the Aeroflot fleet are used under operating lease agreements.
After the start of a special military operation in Ukraine, Western countries stopped supplying Russia with civilian aircraft and spare parts and forced their lessors to return already rented liners from the Russian Federation.
The Russian authorities decided that the airlines should not return the planes and instead transferred them to the national registry and continued to operate.
The residual value of more than 500 aircraft from foreign lessors that remained in the Russian Federation was estimated at $20 billion, Savelyev said in March 2022.
