In general, we often think that salty foods taste better. And there are two explanations for this. Firstly, salt contributes to the release of various fluids in the digestive tract and the appearance of appetite. Second, it often improves the taste of food, as it reacts with certain substances it contains.
But what about the effect of salt on human lifespan?
There is a study showing that people who eat salty foods live longer. Scientists collected data on sodium intake in 181 countries – from around the world. It turns out that for each gram increase in average daily sodium intake, life expectancy from birth increases by 2.6 years. The 60-year active life expectancy increases by 0.3 years.
However, this does not mean that large amounts of salt will allow you to live longer. The thing is, the above study is observational in nature.
What’s more, recent research from the Harvard School of Public Health shows that the more salt a person has in their diet, the more likely they are to die prematurely from all causes. And on the contrary, the life expectancy from salt decreases. This became known after a survey of more than 500,000 people aged 40 to 69. Participants were followed for nine years.
