Scientists of the Russian Center for Transplantology, named after Academician Shumakov and located in Moscow’s Shchukin, announced the formation of an artificial analogue of the left ventricle (LIV), intended for the treatment of children from three years old, but not older than ten years old.
This development, which has been worked on for several years, is the only reason for heart failure in young children to wait for a donor organ.
According to the testimony of Timur Khalilulin, a doctor at the center, implantation of a heart in a patient with a low weight from an already older donor is practically impossible due to the presence of anthropometry, or, one might say, transplantation, size discrepancy. In the presence of a diagnosis, the heart pumps blood weakly, for which a kind of “pump” in the form of the left ventricle is responsible – an artificial assistant has been developed to support it with Shchukin cells.
The “pump” is built on a titanium structure, in which a turbine rotates at a high rotation speed, powered by a battery, which is always on the patient’s belt – with the ILI, it is turned off by a wire.
A small patient will not part with this design until he recovers from this disease or reaches a dose that allows him to receive a donor heart from an adult.
Previously, the specialists of the Center for Transplantology performed similar operations, but with the use of American artificial “pumps”, which, unlike the new development, cover only those children whose age is over five. let.
