One of the biggest PC gaming platforms, Steam will end support for Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 from January 1, 2024. The information surfaced in Valve’s announcement of the latest beta update of its service.
“After this date, the Steam Client will no longer work on these versions of Windows. You will need to upgrade to a newer version of Windows to continue using Steam and any games or products purchased through the service.”
The beta version of Steam already warns Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 users of the end of support and recommends that Microsoft’s operating system be replaced or updated. This notification will soon be seen by players using the stable version of the platform.
“The newest features of the service are based on a built-in version of Google Chrome that no longer works on older versions of Windows. Additionally, future versions of Steam will require features and security updates that are only available in Windows 10 and later.
Windows user base accounts for 96.37% of total active Steam accounts. Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 account for only 1.86% of PC gamers, while Windows 10 and 11 have the highest user counts at 62.33% and 32.06%, respectively.
