Developed by Airbus UpNext in collaboration with Germany, Spain and France, the technology Auto’Mate aims to automate the refueling process to reduce crew fatigue, human error and training costs and increase efficiency.

In the six-hour test, the control of the unmanned aerial vehicles was transferred from the ground station to the tanker and then guided using artificial intelligence and collaborative control algorithms. The drones were brought to a suitable position within 45 m of the tanker for refueling. The autonomous system controlled the relative navigation of the aircraft, communicating between them and applying precision control to avoid collisions and other problems.

A second series of tests, using AI-based navigation sensors and advanced algorithms, involving two more drones, is scheduled for the end of the year.
