Funnel web spiders are known for females eating their mates, usually after mating. For this reason, men are afraid to approach aggressive women and have to resort to tricks to attract them.

The researchers studied the spiders’ behavior in the lab and found that females voluntarily enter a state of complete immobility during mating. This allows men to approach them safely and engage in sexual intercourse. At the same time, females control the duration of this state and recover quickly after mating.

The scientists also noted that females choose which males to play dead with. If the spider doesn’t like the spider, it will keep moving, scaring it.
