Researchers at the University of Amsterdam have found that you can detect a liar with almost 80 percent accuracy using this very simple test.
In a series of nine studies, 1,445 people had to guess whether various stories were true or false. Participants of the study who trusted their intuition did not outperform those who were randomly selected, but participants who were ordered to focus only on the level of detail in the stories distinguished between lies with 59-79% accuracy.
“Our data suggest that relying on a single good signal may be more beneficial than using multiple signals,” the researchers say.
