Most likely, Apple is working on a major update to its online services that will lead to the end of support for legacy software. The move is similar to WhatsApp’s decision to block access to the app on older devices each year due to a lack of updates and new features.
Even older devices like the iPhone 3GS nowadays can use some services like iMessage and iPhone 4 users can make FaceTime calls. Although the new features are not supported by these devices, they never lost their original capabilities.
According to Apple, only 8% of iOS devices still run pre-iOS 15 software, but this will be Apple’s first move of this kind.
